Everything starts with two phrases. You'll hear them hundreds of times between December 24 and January 1.
For the family group chat
Most families have a WhatsApp group, and it gets busy in December. A message in Spanish from you stands out, even a short one.
For their mom
With your partner's parents, use the respectful usted form (here's why). Put her name in it, and it becomes personal.
For a grandparent far away
Send these as a voice note, not a text. Hearing you try in Spanish is the gift. Grandparents replay them for everyone.
For New Year's
Three mistakes to avoid
- Always type the ñ. Año means year. Without the tilde, ano means something very different, and the whole group chat will notice. On your phone, press and hold the n.
- Don't use tú with their parents or grandparents unless they've asked you to. Que Dios la bendiga (usted) is right; que Dios te bendiga sounds too casual from you.
- Don't only send it in English. Even one line in Spanish, with a mistake in it, means more than a perfect paragraph in English.

How do you say Merry Christmas to your mother-in-law in Spanish?
¡Feliz Navidad, Doña Rosa! using her first name, or ¡Feliz Navidad, suegra! if your partner says that's how the family talks. Add Gracias por todo su cariño (thank you for all your love) to make it warmer.
Is it Feliz Navidad or Felices Navidades?
Feliz Navidad is used everywhere. Felices Navidades is more common in Spain. In Latin America you'll also hear Felices fiestas for the whole season.
When should I send a Christmas message to a Latino family?
On the evening of December 24. For many families, Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) is the main celebration, with dinner late at night and hugs at midnight.
