The words you need

A toast is a brindis, and "cheers" is ¡Salud! (literally "health"). That's enough to join in. To lead one, you need a way to start:

¡Salud!Cheers!
Quiero hacer un brindis.I'd like to make a toast.
¿Puedo decir unas palabras?May I say a few words?Softer and very polite. Perfect if you're a guest.

The four-line formula

  1. Ask for the moment: ¿Puedo decir unas palabras?
  2. Thank the hosts: for the food, the invitation, the welcome.
  3. Say one true thing about the family or your partner.
  4. Raise your glass: ¡Salud!
Keep it short. Four sentences, said slowly and with a smile, beat a long speech every time. Nobody is grading your grammar. They're watching you try.
