How to introduce yourself in Spanish to their family

Name, where you're from, what you do, how you met, and why you're learning Spanish. That's the whole introduction. Tap each line to hear it.

Hola, mucho gusto. Me llamo Sam.Hi, nice to meet you. My name is Sam.Swap in your name.
Soy de Chicago.I'm from Chicago.
Trabajo como enfermera.I work as a nurse.Enfermero if you're a man. More jobs below.
Ana y yo nos conocimos en el trabajo.Ana and I met at work.Swap in your partner's name.
Estoy aprendiendo español para hablar con ustedes.I'm learning Spanish so I can talk with all of you.This is the line that gets the smiles. Ustedes means all of you.
You don't need all five at once. Say the first line at the door. The rest will come up naturally at the table, one question at a time.

Make it yours

SayIt means
Soy maestro / maestra.I'm a teacher. (-o for a man, -a for a woman)
Soy ingeniero / ingeniera.I'm an engineer.
Soy estudiante.I'm a student.
Trabajo en ventas.I work in sales.
Trabajo en tecnología.I work in tech.
Trabajo desde casa.I work from home.

And for how you met:

Nos conocimos en una aplicación.We met on an app.Very common, and nobody minds.
Nos conocimos por unos amigos.We met through friends.
Nos conocimos en la universidad.We met at university.
Llevamos dos años juntos.We've been together for two years.Juntas if you're two women.

Greeting each person

Greet everyone individually, starting with the oldest. In many families women greet with one kiss on the right cheek and men shake hands. Follow your partner's lead.

Mucho gusto, señora.Nice to meet you, ma'am.
Encantado de conocerla.Delighted to meet you.Encantada if you're a woman. Conocerla to a woman, conocerlo to a man.
Hola, ¿cómo estás?Hi, how are you?With siblings and cousins your age, the casual tú is fine.

With their parents and grandparents, use the respectful usted. Here's the simple rule.

Questions

How do you introduce yourself in Spanish?

Hola, mucho gusto. Me llamo Sam. (Hi, nice to meet you. My name is Sam.) Then add where you're from with Soy de... and what you do with Trabajo como...

Should I say encantado or encantada?

It matches you, the speaker: encantado if you're a man, encantada if you're a woman.

Is it me llamo or soy?

Both are right. Me llamo Sam is the classic; Soy Sam is shorter and just as natural.

What if I forget the whole script?

Mucho gusto and a smile is enough. If they speak too fast, use a rescue phrase like Más despacio, por favor.
