The two phrases you need
For your mother-in-law
Use usted with her (here's why), and put her name in it. Doña plus her first name is warm and respectful.
For their grandparents
For siblings and cousins
With people your own age, switch to the relaxed tú.
What happens at the party
- Las Mañanitas (Mexico): the traditional birthday song, often sung early in the morning or when the cake comes out. You don't need to know the words: clap, smile, and join the last line.
- La mordida (Mexico): the birthday person takes a bite of the cake with no hands, and someone may push their face into it. Have your phone ready.
- The cake (Colombia): you'll hear ponqué for cake, and the party often turns into dancing.
- Everyone hugs the birthday person when they arrive and when they leave. Join the line.

How do you say happy birthday to your mother-in-law in Spanish?
¡Feliz cumpleaños, Doña Rosa! with her first name, or ¡Feliz cumpleaños, suegra! if your partner says that's how the family talks. Add Que pase un día muy bonito (I hope you have a lovely day).
What is Las Mañanitas?
The traditional Mexican birthday song. Families often sing it first thing in the morning, or when the cake arrives.
Is it Feliz cumpleaños or Felicidades?
Both. Feliz cumpleaños means happy birthday. Felicidades means congratulations, and it's also used for birthdays, especially in messages.
Should I use usted or tú in a birthday message?
Usted with parents and grandparents. Tú with siblings and cousins your age.
